Description:
Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Reports to Paralegal Manager; works under the direction of assigned attorneys.   Responsibilities:   Under general supervision, provide organizational and substantive support to State and Local Tax department attorneys in the areas of discovery, document management, pleading/motion and trial/appellate preparation.  Assist with department’s business development projects.  Assignments may extend into other practice areas and departments.  Ensure client service and satisfaction are attained in all areas of position.   Essential Functions:   Client Service 1. Consistently promote and model the Firm's Client Service Principles in teamwork, work product, and personal interaction. 2. Ensure exemplary client service to all internal and external clients; proactively promote client service throughout department and among teams; respond to peer requests with recognition that request serves a client or Firm need. Paralegal Responsibilities Case and Document Management 1. Manage assigned cases and their related tasks and projects. 2. Perform full range of paralegal tasks from case inception through discovery, trial, post-trial proceedings and case closure. 3. Assist attorneys in ensuring that all documentation associated with a case, such as correspondence, pleadings, briefs, document productions, research files, e-mails, etc., is filed as appropriate.  4. Assist with management and maintenance of SALT department docket. 5. Prepare and distribute daily CCH and State Tax Today reports. 6. Prepare pro hac vice admission motions and powers of attorney; maintain department chart of pro hac admissions. 7. Responsible for maintaining workrooms/caserooms/your desk in an organized and neat manner; all files, boxes and case materials are identified and clearly labeled with client matter number and other key information. Discovery 1. Discovery:  Assist in responding to discovery requests; perform document review and organization; number, indexes and make arrangements for copying or imaging; prepare document productions; coordinate documents produced with document management systems; analyze and summarize documents as requested. 2. Depositions:  Prepare witness files; select and assemble potential deposition exhibits; responsible for reproduction of exhibits; summarize/index transcripts. 3. Motions:  Coordinate preparation, filing and service of motion papers (manual and electronic); assist attorneys with factual research; cite check, Shepardize and proofread briefs; assist with compilation and/or preparation exhibits and appendices. 4. Other Discovery:  Assist in preparing other discovery requests and responses when assigned; summarize responses from other parties; prepare subject matter/issue files; monitor court docket sheets for assigned cases; implement and maintain case management tools and procedures.   Trial Preparation 1. Assist in selecting and assembling potential trial exhibits. 2. Assist in preparation of charts, graphs and other demonstrative evidence. 3. Assist in preparing pre and post trial motions and briefs, including cite checking, Shepardizing and compiling appendices. 4. Provide support during trial as needed. 5. Summarize/index trial transcripts as requested. 6. Assist in post-trial activities as needed. Research, Monitoring and Factual Analysis: 1. Conduct court and docket searches. 2. Conduct factual research; examine public records; monitor legislative and administrative proceedings as assigned. 3. Retrieve cases as requested. 4. Assist with preparation, drafting and cite checking of articles, speeches and other business development materials as requested. Administrative Duties 1. Complete and release time notes on a daily basis. 2. Complete and release time sheets on a weekly basis. 3. Ensure that minimum billable hours expectation is met. 4. Proactively work with your supervisor and the attorneys in your group to seek out additional work when your billable hours expectation cannot be met through regular assigned work. Professional Development 1. Remain current in industry trends in State and Local Tax and the legal profession. 2. Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; proactively use most current technology to further teamwork, client service, and efficiency.  3. Participate on projects that increase the value of services to clients, attorneys, timekeepers and the Firm.  4. Ensure client service and performance consistently meet Career and Compensation Management Program (“CCMP”) expectations for Matrix Level 4.  5. Regularly review position against Matrix expectations and develop goals to further increase position value.  Confidentiality Ensure compliance with the Firm's Confidentiality Policy, including safeguarding confidential and personal information, and reporting any suspected breach appropriately and immediately.
Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree with strong academic record required. 

2. Minimum of three years experience as a litigation paralegal in a large to mid-sized law firm preferred. 

3. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

4. Proficiency with LEXIS and Westlaw required.

5. Proficiency with cite checking and Bluebook rules required.
